I wasn’t especially attached to this chair when I moved in with my now husband, but as it is so comfortable it has become a favorite and being in disrepair I needed to save it. Reupholstering it would be a small fortune and as the cushions aren’t in bad shape I really didn’t want to bother yet. After a friend showed me where people patched up their furniture with doilies I thought I could manage it with a similar idea. My husband has now dubbed it the jean jacket chair with all its funky patches and flair. I think it is fun (maybe not for everybody) but suits our colorful eclectic home.
Super comfy chair in need of some tlc.
First things first-tackling the big threadbare rip.
I sewed the denim on using curved upholstery needles and embroidery thread after first glueing them down with tacky glue. They will probably fray, and that’s ok. Then I ironed the patch on top.
Threadbare spots covered, rip covered, some added patches for flair, and a wood stain marker to fill in/cover some nicks.
Styled with a faux fur throw blanket that we used to keep over the chair to hide the rip and a throw pillow to match.
Maybe not a fix for everyone, but it feels like a fix for our home. The work of patching furniture can be done in many different ways to suit your style and may just help you save something from being thrown out. It certainly feels good to bring new life to old things.
