Ok, we have lived in this same rental home for nearly nine years. We have done tons to improve the place as not only are we are here and wanting to enjoy it, but we also believe in being good stewards and making a place better for our being there. We try. We’ve made a trellis-fence and a gate for the yard, planted lots of plants, put in pathways where walking made the grass into a mud pit, etc. This time Cory wanted to make a pond. I thought ponds were largely sort of permanent fixtures and were all exceedingly expensive, but it turns out that really doesn’t have to be the case. We made a pond we plan to take with us whenever we one day move to our own house, but can enjoy for now.
Our pond is pretty well done, but the area around it like the pond is ever evolving. We have around 20 fish so far and I think 4 snails, but as a couple are tiny there might be an extra one or two. Of our fish we have 3 koi, a few goldfish, one fantail goldfish and one fancy spotted goldfish and several minnows. They are so fun to watch and are starting to come to the surface more as they are getting more comfortable. Cory had a great idea and cut holes into a couple of terracotta pots for the fish to use as castles so they have some places to hide.
Our pond is dug in half way and we have put bricks partly around as our friend gave them to us and we like how they look. We planted some plants that will eventually fill out to really add some more protection around the sides. I love the jungle feel they give! Cory put bamboo over the pumps to make them more pretty and jungle-looking. I think it really adds to the aesthetic. The water lily and water hyacinths add more spots for the fish to hide and visually turn this cow tank to a pretty pond!
Cory added a fishbowl as a tower for the fish to swim up and look out. I love when they do this!
Our biggest fish, this silver koi we named Cher likes to swim up and look out. The angle of the glass makes it appear larger than it is.
The solar fountain can really get going!
