Ft Clatsop is where Lewis and Clark overwintered on the Oregon coast near present day Astoria. There is a reproduction of the original fort there with hiking trails, a visitor center that has a museum inside, and it hosts speakers on different topics relevant to the area. Part of the National Parks system, it’s good to have a pass to go for a visit.
The fort was very small. It housed 32 men, a woman, a baby and a dog.
Inside the museum there are models of the other forts on the expedition, and all sorts of info on the tribes in the area, the equipment the expedition had to travel with, and the natural resources around Ft Clatsop.
If you find yourself around Astoria this is a neat place to stop and check out a piece of our country’s history. The bookshop in the visitor center is also a good place to pick up an interesting read. I bought the Lewis and Clark journals there a while back (very interesting read) and most recently a book on Northwest Native Art.
