After recently embroidering The Starry Night using a pattern I wanted to see if I was able to make my own design from a photo. I came up with several ideas but decided on a Pacific sea nettle as my subject as they are my favorite jellyfish and It continues a theme from my paintings. I went through my google photos looking through old pics from aquariums and found one I wanted to reference. It’s not a great photo, but had enough information for me to make something I was happy with. It’s pictured below. I used some batik material from Hobby Lobby and thread and seed beads I’ve collected over the years. I did not make a pattern, but sketched the oval shape of the jelly’s bell and the white ribbed lines underneath with a Frixion pen (because you can iron it off!) as a starting point. I sewed the bell first and then the white oral arms then lastly the tentacles and beads. Sewing is a lot like drawing and is pretty fun to do without patterns in the way sketching is!
