Rogue Brewery is my favorite. When Cory and I got married Rogue in Newport is where we had our after-wedding dinner. We like its chill atmosphere, the boats docked out the window, the view of the water, crabbing on the pier, the BEER.. It’s a great place. Dead Guy Ale is probably their most famous beer and they have a contest each Halloween to celebrate it. The weeks leading up to Halloween their panel of judges pick 3 winners each week, totaling 24 weekly winners who are up for the slot of Grand Prize, $2000- when the contest closes on Halloween.
I am a weekly winner!
I didn’t know if I really had a shot- my style (realism) is pretty far removed from what Rogue uses on their cans and merchandise (think more comic book meets street art-very cool graphic design, not usually too based in reality. I’ve got a lot of their clothes…) I wanted to stay true to my style and try my hand at what I could do with a Dead Guy..
My can design is painted in acrylic directly on the can and features a skeleton chatting it up with the skeleton of a seagull. The gulls are ever-present at the coast so that was a must. I have them on the pier outside the brewery where lots of crabbing takes place (hence the rope knotted on the railing) and a stein of beer on the rail as a nod to the beer Dead Guy is holding in the original. The scene takes place under the Yaquina Bay Bridge as it is the one you drive over to get to the brewery and it features largely on the landscape in Newport.
Winners get a pack of Trekell paintbrushes in their preferred media and a bunch of Rogue goodies. I am pretty excited about both- but as someone who has mostly cheap $1 and $2 brushes… nice brushes will be super fun to work with!
