We decided to go back to the redwoods for our anniversary this year, as we hadn’t been since our first anniversary trip. We did it different this time though with more time in Redwood National and State Parks, and no time in San Francisco.
The drive along the Redwood Hwy section of 101 was really beautiful. We kept seeing herds of elk, but these were so close we got a picture.
We stopped at the Redwood National Park Kuechel Visitor Center to plan our explorations and poke around on the beach a bit. It is in a beautiful spot!
While we agreed with the sentiment, it felt odd to see graffiti in a National Park, kind of a bummer. Otherwise Trillium Falls trail was really nice and clean, and definitely a high point of our trip.
Trillium Falls is a cool trail to see a lot of large old growth redwoods. From there we went on to Klamath Beach Road looking for bears but finding many whales and seals instead!
Whales were spouting off like fireworks, hundreds of seals were sunning themselves, it was a great stop before the hike through the Ladybird Johnson Grove.
This trail was higher in elevation than the largely sea level trails we had been on, and so the weather was much cooler and misty.
The sign above was supposed to be the view below, but it was THAT foggy. We had driven up Bald Hill in search of bears as we had been told they were constantly up there in the later afternoon, but it was so foggy we didn’t see any.
The next day we went to the Humboldt Redwoods, stopping in a few different groves and hiking through by the Founder’s tree. The River in the pictures below is the Eel River. It was so clear!
