I grew up watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind and so have always wanted to see Devil's Tower in person. Once, on a family roadtrip, we went through Gilette and must have been so close- but somehow we all missed it entirely. This time Cory and I made it a point to go there and hike around its base to really take it in. It was so impressive, and the hike had not only amazing views of the Tower, but also of all the beautiful scenery surrounding. There were tons of prairie dogs on the way scurrying around, woodpeckers in the trees and not a ton of people. It was a lovely time to be there.
Shortly after we parked and we’re walking to the trailhead we saw someone way up, climbing the tower!
The Tower trail had a lot of information at different spots throughout about how the tower is thought to have formed, about the first people to live around the Devil's Tower and their beliefs about it, and all about the geology we were seeing.
Sunset really made Devil’s Tower glow.
